COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Fresh off its first trip to the NAIA National Championship, the Lindsey Wilson College softball team has added 11 new players to its 2011 recruiting class, head coach Ashley McCool announced on Tuesday.
Six incoming freshmen join five junior-college transfers to make up McCool's large haul in just her second year at the helm of the Blue Raider softball program.
The group of high school signees includes Becca Bush, Kayla Green, Michelle Lehman, Meghan Mays, Sara Tichenor and Wendy Vincent.
Junior-college transfers in the class include Amy Buwalda, Mikaila Etheridge, Kaylee Garrett, Amy Harner and Emily Priar.
Becca Bush was a three-sport star at Green County High School in Greensburg, Ky. The all around athlete will split time in the outfield and pitching for Lindsey Wilson.
"Becca's high school team made it to the state tournament this year, so she knows what it takes to win," McCool said. "She is a great hitter and athlete and will be a great asset to our team."
Kayla Green comes from the highly successful softball program at Ravenwood High School in Nolensville, Tenn. The versatile pitcher, first baseman and outfielder is expected to be in the mix for playing time right away.
"The strongest part of Kayla's game is her hitting," explained McCool. "She holds many of the hitting records at Ravenwood and will also have a chance to see time in the circle with the way she keeps batters off balance. I look forward to having Kayla on the team."
Adding speed to the roster will be Michelle Lehman, a product of Vestaburg High School in Vestaburg, Mich. Lehman is an outfielder who puts pressure on the defense with her slapping skills at the plate combined with exceptional speed.
"Michelle could possibly be the fastest girl on our team next season," McCool said, "She is a leader on the field and knows the game so well. I look for her to come in and contribute in many ways for our team."
Another speedster will be Meghan Mays from Powell County High School in Stanton, Ky. As one of the most athletic recruits in the class, Mays can play multiple positions which adds a lot of speed and versatility to the team.
"Meghan will fit in with our team very well," McCool said. "She was the valedictorian of her class and adds a lot of speed to our roster. I'm really excited to see Meghan at Lindsey Wilson in the fall."
Left-handed power hitter Sara Tichenor is another all-around athlete who will add depth to the team out of Wilson Central High School in Hermitage, Tenn.
"Sara plays first base and also comes from a very good high-school program," McCool said. "She is such a hard worker and I feel like she will make a difference on our team right away."
Louisville, Ky., native Wendy Vincent is a middle infielder with a consistent bat out of Butler High School.
"Wendy has the kind of speed that will help our team this season," McCool said. "She will add depth to our infield as she can play many positions and knows the game very well."
Amy Buwalda joins the Blue Raiders after transferring from Motlow State Community College in Fayetteville, Tenn. The Mt. Juliet, Tenn., native plays the corners of the infield and will be a threat at the plate in the Mid-South Conference.
Motlow State made the Junior College National Tournament in 2009 while Buwalda put together a .355 batting average during the season with 18 doubles and seven home runs.
"The first time I saw Amy I knew I had to get her on our team," McCool said. "She has some of the fastest hands I have seen and hits the ball with so much power. She knows what it takes to get our team to the next level."
Mikaila Etheridge from Columbia State (Tenn.) Community College will add depth to the catcher position where Lindsey Wilson used All-American Ally Goniea in every game last season.
Etheridge will be reunited with current Blue Raider pitcher Morgan Paschall who she caught when they both played at Columbia State in 2009.
"Mikaila was one of my first signees for the 2011 class," explained McCool. "She is a vocal leader and great hitter. She gets along with our team and will fit right in and be a force for our team as a strong, consistent hitter."
Kaylee Garrett has a chance to come in and be one of the top hitters in the MSC right away. Last season at Walters State (Tenn.) Community College, Garrett hit .425 with 17 home runs, 13 doubles and 52 RBIs.
Like Buwalda, Garrett plays on the corners and has the type of bat to double the team's slugging-percentage numbers.
"Kaylee is not only a tremendous hitter and softball player, but is also a great person and leader," McCool said. "I am so excited she chose to continue her collegiate career at Lindsey Wilson."
Adding depth to the outfield will be Amy Harner from Southeastern Iowa Community College. The left handed slapper and power hitter comes from the same junior college as current Blue Raider and All-American pitcher Anyibell Ramirez.
This past season Harner hit .399 and led Southeastern Iowa in home runs. Harner can also play small ball and lay down a bunt and beat the throw out to first.
"Amy is very passionate about the game and is an all-around athlete who will do what it takes to win," McCool said. "We expect big things from Amy and look forward to seeing her have a great season."
The final member of the class is Owensboro, Ky., native Emily Priar. Playing for Wabash Valley (Ill.) College last season, Priar tallied a batting average over .400 and was 19-for-19 in stolen-base attempts.
"Emily will definitely make our team better this year," McCool said. "She will be one of the hardest working and most dedicated players on the team. She is the all-around softball player since she can play just about every position on the field. She is also very fast while also hitting for power."
Lindsey Wilson finished last season with a 47-14 record and 22-6 mark in MSC play.
After sweeping the conference's regular and postseason championships, the Blue Raiders advanced to their first NAIA National Championship where they finished 2-1 in pool play. The lone loss came against eventual national champion Simon Fraser (B.C.) University 2-0.
