COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College baseball team scored 31 runs on 21 hits in a sweep of the University of Cincinnati-Clermont on Monday at Lindsey Wilson Park. The Blue Raiders tallied a mercy-rule five inning 16-6 win in game one and won 15-7 in game two.
Craig Mosier led Lindsey Wilson in the opener going 1-for-2 with a home run, two RBI, three runs scored and a walk. Right fielder Jeremy Toohey turned in a 1-for-3 performance with five RBI, two runs and a double. Shortstop Drew Barrett was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with a run and an RBI.
Led by second baseman Heath Barnes reaching base on an error and center fielder Dustin Murphy driving him home with a single, the Blue Raiders put together a five-run first inning in game one.
After being held scoreless in the second, Lindsey Wilson roared back in the third with six more runs. Cincinnati-Clermont didn't held their cause any in the inning, committing a multitude of errors in the field.
In the third inning alone, Clermont was registered with a wild pitch, passed ball, wild throw, a balk and a bobble in the infield.
While the Cougars collected three runs in both the third and fourth innings, it was not enough to claw back into the game. Lindsey Wilson added five more runs in the fourth inning, including a single by Kyle O'Hara that scored Jacob Cheesman and gave the Blue Raiders a 10-run lead to end the game.
Jared Long earned the win in game one despite allowing five earned runs and walking six batters in four innings of work. Long did strike out six batters, while Jose Castro entered in the fifth inning to close the game with one strikeout and one hit.
Max Rhodes had a monster game in the nightcap, going 4-for-5 at the plate with five RBI and three runs. Rhodes also stole a base and notched a pair of doubles. Left fielder Jeff Murphy also impressed going 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and a walk.
This time it was the Cougars jumping out to a fast start with three runs in the top of the first inning. Levi Duncan walked the Cougars Dominic Costanzo, followed by a double by right fielder Jeff Muse to score Costanzo. Left fielder Andrew Hord also doubled, scoring Muse, followed by Hord coming in to score on a bobble by Cheesman.
Lindsey Wilson failed to put any runs on the board in the first two innings, while UC-Clermont tallied another run in the second inning on a single by Muse. Lindsey Wilson waited until the third inning to come alive.
Rhodes singled to score Dustin Murphy, and then Rhodes came in to add a run on a single by Jeff Murphy. In all, the Blue Raiders scored three runs to start their comeback against the Cougars.
Trailing 6-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, Lindsey Wilson exploded for 10 runs to take over the game. A triple by right fielder Joseph Willis brought in the winning runs as Dustin Murphy, Rhodes and Jeff Murphy put Lindsey Wilson in front 8-6.
The Blue Raiders added seven more runs and held onto its nine-run lead despite the Cougars scoring one run in the top of the seventh inning.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at noon CT on Friday, March 26 at Campbellsville (Ky.) University.
