COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Lindsey Wilson College baseball team dropped a pair of games today to visiting University of the Rio Grande (Ohio) at Lindsey Wilson Park.
Rio Grande (14-3, 3-1 in the Mid-South Conference) swept the doubleheader by scores of 12-8 and 7-2. Lindsey Wilson falls to 8-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play with the losses.
In game one, the Redstorm out-slugged the Blue Raiders 12-8. Rio Grande scored in all but one inning and scored multiple runs in four of the seven innings.
The Lindsey Wilson bats were just as potent led by senior Max Rhodes and sophomore Drew Barrett.
Rhodes finished the game with three hits, including his second home run of the season. He added a pair of runs and four runs batted in. Barrett launched his first homer of the season with a three-run shot in the sixth inning.
Rio's Chris Mahon led the Redstorm with three hits and four RBIs.
In the second game, Rio played small ball to win 7-2. The Redstorm plated a single run in the first, fourth, fifth, sixth and seven innings and a pair of runs in the second inning to gradually build their lead.
The Lindsey Wilson bats managed just three hits in the nightcap.
But the Blue Raiders had their chances early in the game. Lindsey Wilson left eight runners on base -- including bases loaded in the third and fourth innings -- through the first four innings.
Rio Grande's Tyler Schunk -- who picked up the win in relief -- did not allow a hit over the last 3-2/3 innings to help the Redstorm finish the weekend winning three out of four.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday, March 14, as the Blue Raiders host Indiana University Southeast at Lindsey Wilson Park.
